A beer list as a group stage
The clever part of this promotion was the beer list. Rather than discounting whatever was overstocked, each bottle was matched to a competing nation through something real about how it was made — Grains of Paradise from West Africa in the Snapshot, Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand and Australia in the Shift, a Belgian style in the 1554, a German Helles.
It turned a $6 bottle list into a reason to try something different every match, which is a more durable idea than a discount.
Why a café made a good viewing room
Group-stage matches kick off in the middle of the working day, which suits a restaurant that opens at eight and serves food continuously far better than it suits a sports bar that opens at four.
Bar snacks and tapas from 11 AM meant you could watch a noon match properly rather than nursing a drink until the kitchen woke up.
