A neighborhood place, open early, open late

Commissary has spent its life doing one thing: being the room on P Street that is always open, always affordable, and always full of people who live within a few blocks of it.

The short version

Commissary is Logan Circle’s casual neighborhood café. We serve breakfast & brunch, lunch & dinner, snacks & smoothies as well as house-made desserts and shakes, along with an expansive daily happy hour. We have a large bar, cozy lounge area, outside café and free Wi-Fi. Our diverse menu is simple and affordable, with breakfast all day, sandwiches, salads and pizza for lunch or dinner, plus a great selection of dinner entrees and daily seasonal specials. Commissary is the perfect any day, any time place.

What “neighborhood place” actually means here

Most restaurants pick a daypart and defend it. Commissary went the other way. The doors open at 8 AM for coffee and eggs, the lunch board goes up at 11, happy hour starts at 3, and dinner runs to 9:30 or 10 depending on the night. One room, one kitchen, one long day.

The practical result is that you do not have to plan around us. A laptop and a cortado at 9 AM, a burger between meetings, a $6 draft on the patio at 4, a full dinner at 8 — the same room absorbs all of it without changing character.

That is also why the menu is deliberately broad rather than deep. Breakfast never leaves. Sandwiches, salads, bowls and thin-crust pizza carry the middle of the day. Dinner adds entrees and seasonal specials without retiring anything that came before it.

The room itself

Three distinct spaces under one roof, which is what lets the place hold a laptop crowd and a birthday party at the same hour.

The dining room

Seats 90 comfortably. Tables spaced for real conversation, and the section nearest the windows gets the good afternoon light.

The bar & lounge

A full bar with standing room plus seating for fifteen. This is where happy hour concentrates, and where the bar keeps pouring until 7.

The outside café

Twenty-five more seats on the patio. First to fill on the first warm Saturday of the year, and worth arriving early for.

Free Wi-Fi

Open network, no purchase code, no two-hour timer. Morning regulars have been working from the corner tables for years.

Local and sustainable, without the speech

The emphasis on local and sustainable sourcing is not a marketing position bolted on after the fact. EatWell DC, the group Commissary belongs to, went as far as buying a farm when it could not find suppliers who could hit both the quality and the price the dining room needed.

EatWell Natural Farm now grows produce that arrives in this kitchen directly. Where the farm cannot cover an ingredient, the sourcing decision still runs through the same filter: is it good, is it responsible, and can we serve it at a price a neighbor will pay twice a week rather than twice a year.

That last clause is the one that matters most. A sustainability program that pushes an entree past $30 is a program for special occasions. Commissary is not a special occasion.

Part of the EatWell DC family

Commissary sits inside a small group of District restaurants that share a farm, a sourcing philosophy, and a lot of staff who have moved between them over the years. Logan Tavern is two doors down at 1423 P St. NW. Grillfish is on New Hampshire Avenue, The Pig is on 14th Street, and The Charles and Market at LP round out the block.

If Commissary is full — and on a Sunday morning it will be — the family restaurants are close enough to walk to and run by people who will look after you the same way.
